Online business marketing is difficult.

February 2, 2016 by Yawhann Leave a Comment

You know that an effective online business marketing plan can extend your reach to potential customers who will benefit most from your products and/or services. You provide amazing value to those who decide to invest in you.

At least, you would if more people knew about you.

That’s where we come in. For the most part, we’ve been doing things the old fashioned way ourselves, finding our clients through word-of-mouth referral, which has been amazing to us as I’m sure it has to you.

But only at the start, because it’s not sustainable for the long term. After a while, business waxes and wanes, and then you’re right back where you started, unsure if you’ll be able to pay your bills this month.

We get it. We’ve gone through it ourselves.

This is why we decided that this year, in 2016, we’d do things differently.

We’d reach out with a bang. Get the right people watching us.

Sometimes, that means saying no to the wrong people. So, we’ll say it now:

  • if you’re not passionate about your business,
  • if you’re only out to make a quick buck off any poor sap,
  • if you don’t believe your product and/or service provides value to your target market, and
  • if you don’t have a sense of humor…

…take your scammy eyes off our website and reconsider your career, because you’re killing your potential and making the rest of us look bad.

Now that I have your attention, let’s talk about why online business marketing is a challenging exercise to undertake on your own.

It takes time to plan and implement

You have your hands full enough handling your day-to-day activities like perfecting your product and learning new techniques to make your offering unique.

Marketing isn’t something you can do overnight. You have to carefully plan your online business marketing strategy.

Do you need a basic website or a blog? If you start a blog, who will write your content?

Do you want to use Facebook or do you also want to leverage Google+, Twitter, Instagram, and Pinterest? Who will post all your updates?

Then there’s the heavy task of actually doing all that work.

Will you do it all manually or look into automation? Do you even know what automation solutions are out there?

If your head is dizzy, you’re not alone. We spent years figuring out all this nonsense, and we come from backgrounds in IT and web agencies.

The worst part is, it’s always changing, so you have to be on top of it or get left behind.

You need to do a lot of market research

Aside from the process of planning and implementation, there are the countless hours of finding out who your target audience is – what are their fears, goals, aspirations, likes – and catering your message in such a way that it speaks to them from the heart and gets them so excited about how your product or service offering can help solve that itch they need to scratch.

Get ready to spend years constantly reading several books on the topic of marketing, sales, and psychology, by the way.

You need to have effective writing, not design

It used to be that in the infancy of the commercialised Internet and dot-com boom, all you had to do was slap a website together with a fancy design and you were in business.

However, ask yourself one question – where are all those startups today? Out of the ones that are left, why are they still relevant today?

Because they knew that design is only on the surface – knowing how to write well is key to any kind of marketing with awesome results.

Effective writing is that special sauce that many businesses lack. It communicates why your customers should choose you over your competitors.

It’s the reason why some businesses can grow exponentially over others who don’t pay attention to their writing. It positions you as the premier source for your particular product or service.

However, not everybody can write effectively and well.

A love letter to web design.

Dear web design,

It’s been a few years since Ian and I started getting to know you. In that time, we both gained some valuable insight into your inner workings and quirks; both good and bad. We had our ups and downs, and things actually started to look a little bleak for us. However, I wrote this letter to tell you something very important.

We haven’t given up on you yet.

It was decided that the way we approached you was perhaps not the most ideal method. Dreaming of a big, celebrity status for our firm? Yeah, that’s dumb. Tackling on clients from all industries by the truckloads? No way, we like having lives too. Offering a ton of services for diversity? I’m sure those clients can find pros who are way better at it than we are.

I learned something when I was a young pup in school. A teacher taught us the value of the KISS principle. In short, KISS stands for “Keep It Simple, Stupid”. That’s right, he actually used the word “stupid” in school. He was our Coach Carter. 🙂

Delving further into that, there’s also a handful of sayings: a picture is worth a thousand words, less is more, the road less traveled, etc. You see where I’m getting at?

So, we’d like to make something clear. We still love you, web design. We’re just going to love you more simply; one that will benefit less people in a bigger way. That sounds appealing, doesn’t it?

Yours truly,

The guys at UnMedia
